The religious rite of marriage

A choice of faith: to marry with religious rite.

Catholic spouses have always chosen to marry before Christ. If this represents your wedding perspective, know that the exciting religious rite of marriage as explained by Pope Francis “is a Sacrament that takes place ‘in’ the Church and that also ‘does’ the Church, starting a new family community.” The religious marriage is, in fact, a journey destined to last for life that, in the initial phase or the ceremony, consists of 10 different moments.

The 10 moments of the Catholic rite

1. The entrance of the newlyweds. The husband, very excited, enters the church accompanied by his mother and waits for the arrival of his sweet half. The moment when the bride walks down the aisle to her father’s arm is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting moments of the wedding.
2. The rite of Baptism and the renewal of promises. At this moment the bride and groom renew their promises of faith and relive the fundamental passages of the Rite of Baptism.
3. Liturgy of the Word. Relatives, witnesses or friends begin to read some passages selected by the couple. The readings end with the reading of the Gospel by the parish priest.
4. Homily. After the readings, the minister of faith devotes a moment to reflection on the path that led the newlyweds to marriage.
5. Wedding liturgy. The newlyweds, moved, pronounce the marriage vows, answering the questions of the parish priest.
6. Blessing and exchange of the wedding bands. The bridesmaid or pawn arrives at the altar handing over the pillow of the wedding bands. The priest will first bless them and then give them to the spouses so that they may exchange them.
7. Reading of prayers and offertory procession. These are two moments that require the participation of friends. Usually, in fact, the prayers are dedicated to the spouses. The priest ends this moment by invoking the intercession of the Saints to protect the new family.
8. Eucharistic Liturgy. Spouses, witnesses, parents and guests receive the sacrament of the Eucharist.
9. Blessing of the newlyweds and final blessing. The parish priest blesses the kneeling spouses, placing his hands on their heads. The religious part of the celebration ends with the final blessing to the faithful.
10. Civil party. At this stage the codes are read, the spouses put their own signatures and prepare to leave the church, waiting for the launch of rice.
