Princes & nobles

The Orsini residence

Located in the heart of Irpinia, Villa Orsini is a prestigious location steeped in history and nobility. Once the residence of princes and aristocrats, it was commissioned by Duke Filippo Berualdo Orsini and built by architects of the Vanvitellian school at the end of the 18th century. Even today, the villa preserves the legacy of the Orsini family: the elegant parlours and period furnishings tell of the villa’s illustrious past.

Flippo Berualdo Orsini held prestigious positions: 16th Duke of Gravina, 7th Prince of Solofra, Gentleman of the Chamber of the King of Naples, First Cavalryman of the Queen of Naples and last Feudal Lord of Mirabella. These assignments led him to move frequently between Naples and Apulia, which is why he decided to build his residence in Passo di Mirabella, a strategic location that facilitated travel and allowed him to host important personalities of the time.

Limpidia

The Roman cellars

The historical value of Villa Orsini emerges strongly in the impressive cellars, dating back to the original Roman structure. Renamed ‘Limpidia’ for an ancient inscription found during the restoration, the cellars now host exclusive tasting moments: the fine Irpinian wines, such as Taurasi and Fiano di Avellino, accompany delicious local delicacies, such as Carmasciano cheese, Podolico caciocavallo cheese and Irpinian cold cuts, including capocollo and soppressata.

The Roman Domus

The park and imperial treasures

The villa stands on the foundations of an ancient Roman Domus dating back to the Imperial Age of Hadrian, of which a section of the wall of the mausoleum of the ancient city of Aeclanum remains today. Surrounded by a natural park of about 70,000 square metres, the villa also houses an ancient Roman aqueduct and a spring dating back to the same period. These precious archaeological remains are under the protection of the Archaeological Superintendence of Salerno and Avellino.
